Beautiful Waterfalls Around the World

Cathedral Falls

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldCathedral Falls is one of West Virginia’s highest and most scenic waterfalls. It is a steep cascade that falls into a natural ampitheatre. The ampitheatre is surely the reason the falls was named ‘Cathedral’.This is a very easy waterfall to visit. It is located in a small roadside park along US 60 about 1 mile east of Gauley Bridge. The falls is visible from the road, and the parking area, but much better views can be had if you take a short walk.It was raining when I visited Cathedral Falls, and had been raining for a couple of days. In drier times the falls will have much less water. There are some lights mounted on the gorge wall opposite the falls, so I assume the falls are sometimes illuminated at night.

Mount Rainier National Park

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldChristine Falls is a waterfall on Van Trump Creek in Pierce County, Washington. The falls are 69 feet (21 m) feet high and are best known for having a bridge spanning the lower drop. One of the most beautifulplaces we have visited is Mount Rainier National Park – an abundance of natural beauty and a myriad of waterfalls.

Columbia River Gorge

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldFed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies, usually it’s highest during winter and spring.Multnomah Falls offers one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods.  Five flows of Yakima basalt are visible in the falls’ cliff face.

Sawtooth Wilderness, Idaho

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldDespite logging more than 100 miles in the Sawtooth Wilderness, I only saw a handful waterfalls. I suspect there were more, even along the trails I was taking, but terrain and vegetation kept them audible but invisible. Water definitely falls great distances — thousands of feet from snowline to the Salmon River — but big waterfalls are rare.

Cumberland Falls, Kentucky

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldLocated in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Southeastern Kentucky, Cumberland Falls State Park is on the Cumberland River, 18 miles southwest of Corbin, with the waterfall bordering Whitley and McCreary Counties. The outstanding natural feature of the park is Cumberland Falls, World famous for its moonbow. The 125 foot wide waterfall has a 68 foot drop that showers onto the boulders that lie in the rocky gorge below. The mist rising from the largest waterfall in Kentucky, creates a unique natural phenomenon that is not visible anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere on a predictable schedule during a time period around the Full Moon.

Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon, Arizona

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldHavasu is arguably the most famous and most visited of all the falls, and is considered one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world. The falls consist of one main chute that drops over a 120-foot (37 m) vertical cliff (due to the high mineral content of the water, the falls are ever-changing and sometimes break into two separate chutes of water) into a large pool.

Langfield Falls  Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldLangfield Falls is one of a pair of fairly easily accessible waterfalls near Tire Junction north of Trout Lake in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The falls veil out over a prominent ledge of conglomerated volcanic breccia, falling 59 feet into a small pool. The falls will range from just a few yards wide to almost 75 feet wide in full flow, greatly altering the character of the whole area. Oddly many sources cite this waterfall as dropping 110 feet when its plainly clear its only half that tall.

Portland Japanese Garden  Waterfalls

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldThe Portland Japanese Garden is a traditional Japanese garden occupying 5.5 acres (22,000 m²), located within Washington Park in the west hills of Portland, Oregon, USA.Waterfalls are sometimes the actual sources of water in Japanese gardens, while in other instances they are dry cascades (kare taki) in which stones simply suggest the fall of water. Both exist in various forms, ranging from a single cascade to one of multiple stages. It is partly in that context that the waterfall plays such an important role in Chinese and Japanese landscape painting, an art form that probably inspired the creation of many Japanese gardens.

Lower Proxy Falls, Three Sisters Wilderness, Willamette National Forest, Oregon

Beautiful Waterfalls Around the WorldLower Proxy Falls, located about two-tenths of a mile away from Upper Proxy, is best viewed from the lookout nearby. Hikers can easily follow the signs to reach the viewpoint where a giant log has been placed to provide the best view of Lower Proxy. There is a smaller trail farther down giving a slightly better view, but it isn’t very secure and therefore isn’t recommended for inexperienced hikers. From the log, visitors can get a full view of Lower Proxy, also approximately 100 feet tall, and see again how the water seemingly goes nowhere.
